Turon is a beloved Filipino snack and dessert made by wrapping sweet, ripe plantains and jackfruit in a crispy spring roll wrapper, then frying to golden perfection. This simple yet irresistible treat is a popular street food in the Philippines, cherished for its blend of sweet, fruity flavors and crunchy texture.

Perfect as a snack or dessert, turon offers a delightful taste of Filipino heritage. Its crispy exterior and caramelized filling make it a crowd-pleaser for all ages and a staple at family gatherings or casual indulgences.

Ingredients
  • 1 ripe yellow plantain
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup jackfruit, sliced thin (canned is okay, fresh is better if available)
  • Spring roll pastry wrappers (or thin spring roll wrappers)
  • Oil, for frying
Instructions
    Prepare the Ingredients:
  1. Slice the plantain thin and lengthwise. Each slice should be about 3 inches long.
  2. Cut the jackfruit into strips.
  3. Assemble the Turon:
  4. Place a spring roll wrapper in front of you in a diamond shape.
  5. Dredge two slices of plantain in brown sugar and place them on the wrapper.
  6. Add a few strips of jackfruit on top of the plantains.
  7. Roll the wrapper tightly, after the first roll, fold in the left and right sides of the wrapper. It will look like an envelope.
  8. Seal the end with a little water.
  9. Fry the Turon:
  10. Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
  11. Fry the rolls until golden brown, turning them to cook evenly.
  12. Before removing the rolls from the oil, sprinkle them with brown sugar. The hot oil will caramelize the sugar and adhere it to the rolls.
  13. Remove from the oil and let them sit on a paper towel to drain any excess oil.
  14. Serve:
  15. Serve while warm. Be careful as they may initially be very hot.
Maricel's Tips

When frying turon, use fresh oil to ensure a clean, sweet taste and perfect crispy texture. The caramelization process thickens the oil, so avoid using the same oil and pan for other foods to keep flavors separate.
