Sweet Korean Pancake

Pancakes have a universal charm, offering comfort and familiarity no matter where you’re from. In Korea, Hotteok takes this beloved dish to the next level with its irresistible combination of crispy exterior and sweet, gooey filling.

Hotteok is a traditional Korean pancake filled with a delightful mix of brown sugar, cinnamon, and crushed nuts. When fried, the sugar caramelizes, creating a warm, indulgent center that perfectly complements the crisp, golden outside. Originally introduced to Korea by Chinese merchants in the late 19th century, Hotteok has become a cherished street food, especially in the colder months when its warmth and sweetness are most welcome.

Whether you’re enjoying it as a snack on a chilly day or as a treat to satisfy your sweet tooth, Hotteok is a perfect example of how Korean cuisine transforms simple ingredients into something truly magical. Try it for a taste of comfort with a distinctly Korean twist!

Instructions

Prepare the Dough:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and active yeast. Gradually add the warm water and mix until a smooth dough forms.
  2. Cover the bowl with a cloth and set it aside in a warm place for at least an hour, or until the dough has doubled in size.

Prepare the Filling:

  1. In a small bowl, mix together the chopped walnuts, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon. Set aside.

Shape the Pancakes:

  1. Once the dough has risen, divide it into 8 to 10 equal pieces. Take one piece and flatten it into a round circle with your hands.
  2. Place a spoonful of the filling mixture in the center of the dough circle. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together to seal the filling inside.

Cook the Pancakes:

  1. Heat 4 to 5 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat. Place the filled dough balls in the skillet, seam side down, and cook for about 3 minutes until golden brown.
  2. Flip the pancake, then press it down gently with a spatula to flatten it. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the other side is golden brown and crispy.

Serve:

  1. Serve hot, right off the skillet. The sweet filling will be gooey and warm, making it the perfect treat for any time of the day.

Maricel's Tips

  • To make sure your hotteok has that perfect crispy exterior, be sure to cook them slowly over medium heat, allowing the dough to brown evenly without burning.
  • Try adding other ingredients to the filling, such as honey, chocolate chips, or dried fruit. This versatile treat is not only delicious but also a fun and easy way to introduce a bit of Korean street food into your home!
